Conclusion

In the nine years I've been doing product reviews I have to say this is the first time I've ever reviewed a "porn" device. As a result it has been difficult for me to attempt to evaluate it strictly on technical merits. A device such as this one screams "controversy" for some, simply because of the type of content involved, so I don't pretend to think that what it does and what it is are entirely seperate things.
Still, the whole concept of IPTV is one in its infancy by and large. And it's no great secret that the erotic content industry has continually been a pioneer of new media.

Is that the case here? Perhaps. The erotic content industry at the very least isn't as hostage to the same legal and financial hurdles the mainstream television and movie industries are, or at least not to the same degree. There are simply less people with their fingers in the pie so to speak in this industry. If any industry can "pave the way" for how to do IPTV profitably and inexpensively, it will probably be this one.

So, how does FyreTV rate in this regard? Pretty good overall, all things considered. When this service and device was announced back in December/January most of the initial press was glowing.

The interface is slick and intuitive and works well with the included remote control. Video quality is excellent for streaming media. FyreTV has been a bit guarded so far as to pricing, but the basic $9.99 a month fee, and suggested additional fees of ~$25 a month to have unlimited viewing of a specific studio's video, or per-minute access charges of ~15cents a minute for non unlimited viewing seem quite inexpensive. (Update: FyreTV has posted more detailed pricing on their website here ). Convenience wise it is certainly better than web alternatives or the neighborhood XXX video store. As long as this sort of thing is your cup of tea, the prospects seem great for FyreTV's success.

Having said that, several months deep into the device's initial beta lifecycle, a beta that started late, there is still a lot of broken basic functionality in the device for FyreTV to address. In the last month we've had the device there have been absolutely no changes or improvements in the interfaces inner workings or functions. What does work works exceedingly well, so we hold some cautious hope that FyreTV will end up fixing these interface problems before the devices intended summertime launch.

I just saw the their ad in Maxim.
I think the service is cool.
Who the hell wants to go to those embarrasing adult stores ! Plus, you can search any movie scene by scene?
For the cost, you can't go wrong.

They've got a long way to go if they want to stay in business. All Netflix or Blockbuster has to do its start offering adult films and they'll be out of business next day.
Actually, with these prices that's inevitable, anyway.
And who wants to deal with a set-top box when you can rent DVDs from urentdvds.com (or Gamelink, one of the other services out there) and use software to rip them so you can watch them any time you want?
Price, price, price and make it stable and reliable, or it's over.
