Features:

Like mentioned earlier the Philips DVP642 plays nearly every media format that is out there. In fact it might be easier to start by mentioning what it DOESN’T play, namely Windows Media Video (.wmv), Quicktime and Real Video.

Here’s what it does play:

Compression formats: "DivX certified" by DivX Networks to play 3.x, 4.x, 5.x DivX video, MPEG1, MPEG2, and MPEG4. XviD also seems to work. Disc Playback Media: CD, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD, DVD+RW, DVD+R, DVD-Video, MP3-CD Audio, Picture CD, SVCD, Video CD

And we’re not talking “convert using a special utility and put in a special folder”, you simply burn the file straight to the disc like a data CD and it plays it from disc no questions asked. Even has a menu browser so you can browse the disc if the file is not in the root directory:

Other notable features include:

--progressive scanning which minimizes screen flicker and improves picture quality, especially on HDTV

--4x video upsampling, which provides smoother images

--“SmartPicture” which allows you to optimize picture settings for color, brightness, saturation, contrast, and sharpness. Especially useful for those DivX files that turn out too dark or saturated.

--JPEG images play as a slide show automatically and allow you to zoom in, rotate, or flip the picture vertically or horizontally using the remote. Unfortunately there’s no way to add background music to the jpeg slide show (unless you convert the jpegs to a slide show video and add background music to the video), but how often do you really need music in the background?

--Not really a feature but it automatically starts playing DivX files, just put them in and they play, you don’t have to adjust settings or anything.

--It’s slim, measuring 17.1 x 1.7 x 9.3 inches, and weighs in at only 4.4 lbs.

--Uses very little power, Less than 10 watts (standby: less than .8 watts)
