Conclusion

Even with the negative aspects of this MP3 player taken into account, I'd recommend it over any other hard drive MP3 player out there. With 1.5 GB’s being plenty of space in my opinion, and at $150 retail (less online) it really competes with 256meg flash-memory MP3 players than hard drive players, and considering it’s the same size if not smaller than 256meg flash players it’s really in a class of it’s own, offering the advantages of both hard drive players (gigabytes of space) and flash players (small size and cheap price).

Let’s Break It Down

- Plays

A 96 kbps double-pass WNA is 50% smaller than a 192 kbps MP3, allowing for twice as many songs on the player. Double-pass 96 kbps WNA sounds virtually identical to the original 192 kbps MP3, especially via the tiny headphones most people use with portable MP3 players.

- Has volume buttons

No turn dials, allowing it to sit in pocket without disruption. Buttons are a little small, but at least you won’t accidentally press them. They were placed in a good area at the front of the player further decreasing the chance of accidentally pressing them.

- Layout

Ports don’t block any buttons. Can plug everything in at once, headphones, power and USB.

- Transferring music

Fast USB 2.0 Can upload, but incredibly slow, somewhere around 75 kbps, so an average 4 Meg. song takes about a minute to upload Requires software, does not show up as a second drive in XP and you can not use XP’s built-in portable music player support through Windows Media Player.

- Sound quality

Incredible quality! No popping when started, no hiss during playback.

- Great hard drive

This thing only weighs 2 oz! That’s about the same as two AA’s, and that includes the screen, case, all electronics, hard drive and power source! Compare that to the iPod Mini weighing 3.6 ounces, which might not seem like a big difference but holding them side-by-side and you’ll definitely notice it. Lasts 16 hours, and that’s with an incredibly tiny power source which much power the LCD and spinning hard drive! That’s equal to most of the flash-memory players out there, yet they have no moving parts like a hard drive so they should get much better battery life. With such incredible power-savings in such a small package yet still offering 1.5 GB’s of space I’d like to see this drive in more devices like cameras, PDAs, perhaps even aftermarket car radios.
