Growth in cellular sales worldwide has reached steamroller proportions, and in the U.S. there are more cell phone accounts now than landlines. As their use becomes more and more pervasive, they equally become more and more indispensable. Offering features heretofore only available on PDA's, cell phones have become far more than just mobile telephone service.

It's with this in mind that we present our first review of a relatively new midrange cellular phone. We’re talking about the Sony Ericsson Walkman W300i from Sony/Ericsson. Why is it a Walkman? Well, it comes with an upgradeable micro XD memory stick with 256MB’s, supports playing of MP3 and AAC audio files, 3GP and MP4 video files and is Bluetooth enabled.

Here we have a device with several significant expectations upon first impression. First, well it *is* a cell phone, so performance as a cellular phone is critical. Adequate signal levels, battery life, size and weight, not to mention price are primary considerations for the cell phone buyer. But this isn’t *just* a cell phone, it's a Walkman®. Sony in the past dominated the portable media market with their Walkman brand. Recent times have seen Sony become a veritable non-entity in this segment, with the iPOD and flash based MP3 players essentially taking over the whole segment.

Has Sony been able to blend a solid performing cellular phone with a portable media player worthy of the Walkman name? Well, that's why we're here, to find out.

As is my norm, let's get the ubiquitous specifications out of the way.
