When caring for data storage devices, the major topic on everyone's mind is heat. Hard drives are the most heat sensitive device in a computer system. Exposing a hard drive to excessive heat diminishes the lifespan of that drive. It is a commonly overlooked cooling issue. The worries of much more expensive items take priority. This is understandable, but even a single degree drop in HDD temp can provide a ten percent increase in the life of the drive. This is a problem for users who run large and dense homemade storage networks. Drive failure is always imminent and maximizing the time between failures is always a plus. Luckily, there are many options on the market for decreasing those temperatures. With those many options in mind, we hope to narrow it down with this review of Vantec Vortex Hard Drive Cooling Systems. Four Vortex coolers will be stressed on a home storage server. We will determine whether or not they are superior to other products on the market.
