Conclusion

px1crossfire Well, we discovered a few noteworthy things here. First, Crossfire scales quite well on the P965 chipset despite it's very different implementation of PCI-E lanes relative to the 975 chipset. Though we haven't finished our own comparison to the 975 (specifically the Abit AW9D review, which is forthcoming), tests and comparison's by our colleagues (with a specific nod towards The TechReport here) show there's little lost with Crossfire on the 965.

x16001 Secondly, the x1600xt is a decent performer for the price when in single card mode. It scales well in Crossfire mode, and that certainly opens up the option for an upgrader who wants to add another card to gain some additional performance later on down the road. Still, if you were deciding on buying two x1600xt's from the get-go, you'd probably be better off buying a single x1950. It'd cost less, and outperform the twin x1600xt's.

Scott's Opinion: It's good to see "cable-less" Crossfire this easy to implement. Nvidia's definitely had the advantage in the way of chipset support and ease of implementation up to this point. Going forward with the R6xx generation, and upcoming chipsets from AMD/ATI and Intel, this situation is bound to get even better.
