EA revealed a new game today called Tiberium, and it will take place within the Command and Conquer universe. They think this new franchise will launch “…players into an epic battle for power”. Tiberium revolves around an extraterrestrial crystal that negates fossil fuels as an energy source. Civilization is depending on this power for its survival, and of course, it could be a self-destructive force as well. EA has been working on this game for over two and half years. They claim to have a dense and unique world that is brought to life through FPS and tactical action. The story of Tiberium is set in a dramatic sci-fi world that is environmentally barren. The "epic" game play involves the battle over this coveted crystalline power source long after the third Tiberium war. The player will play the character Ricardo Vega who is the forward battle commander . The game play is a mix of real time strategy and first person shooter. While simultaneously controlling multiple armor, infantry, and air squads, the player is still in the middle of the action and fighting. Many other games like GRAW and Battlefield have mixed up the RTS/FPS genre before. What sets this apart is the obvious detachment from reality. How this translates into the single and multi-player arenas will be interesting to see. Chris Plummer, Executive Producer at EA Los Angeles states: "Tiberium is our ‘One Ring', our ‘Force'. It is the connective tissue that defines this universe and tears it apart. After two years of pre-production, it is exciting to finally reveal this game and its rich fiction to the world. We've put a lot of effort into evolving the tactical shooter experience by taking core gameplay compulsions like commanding, choice and dominating your enemies and delivering them in first-person. Some of the weapons and mechanics are truly innovative for a first-person game. We're very proud to be part of a project that has the potential to really make a mark on the cannon of sci-fi fantasy fiction." EA went on to talk about their experience with RTS genres by referring back to their successful Command and Conquer series. They are hoping this will be their next new franchise. The sparse website *Update* EA's site is up and running. there is a teaser video available with a forum, a news letter, and not much else. www.tiberium.com |
