Issues

Apart from the initial issues we had with the required Kapersky Antivirus 7.0 installation at first, it has mostly been a trouble free experience with the Yoggie Pico. We say mostly, because we did come across two very curious issues in the weeks we have utilized this device on our main Vista32bit test machine.

The first involves Yahoo Mail. Yahoo has a feature to enable Ajax support for their web mail system, which enhances the behavior of Yahoo Mail and significantly reduces page load times. Although we do not rely on Yahoo Mail for anything important, we did encounter the Yoggie Pico identifying Yahoo Mail incorrectly as CoolDeskAlert.com malware. The only way around this was to disable Yahoo's admittedly beta Ajax support.

The second more serious issue involved seemingly random page load errors in Firefox and IE7. This problem occurred far more frequently when accessing our web server back end management console, but it happened randomly elsewhere, with no clear rhyme or reason.

The issue with reading web page headers resolved itself with the 1.2.4 update the unit automatically obtained, but the false-positive issue with Yahoo Mail's AJAX system remains.

All in all, the experience with the Yoggie Pico was extremely seamless, once we got past the initial conflict issues with Kapersky 7.0. Going through the unit's logs periodically, we can see it is certainly performing as advertised. We noticed the typical swarm of bad behavior you commonly encounter when actually paying attention to your network activity. The issue we have is determining whether or not offloading security from a software suite to a hardware device is really worth it.
