Page 1 of 6 Editor: Jim Edwards Manufacturer: Yoggie Model: Yoggie Pico Personal Price: $179.00 Network security is an ever increasing concern, perhaps more so for the "Road Warrior". Hotels, cafes, airports, campuses, and the ever increasing availability of open WIFI hot spots in major cities make it easy for the mobile maniac to stay connected, wherever he or she may be. Many PCs and Laptops come equipped with Internet security suites. For the most part, these do an adequate job of protecting their users. What are the drawbacks? Increased memory footprint, increased CPU utilization, reduced battery life, and often, perhaps, too much user-required intervention. Mobile computing is all about getting things done. Perhaps there is merit in the argument suggesting that mobile users (the fastest growing user group) are not interested in the distractions of becoming Windows security experts. More to the point, in the case of business IT management, laptops used by field employees are often the weakest link in the chain of enterprise security. Established in 2005, Yoggie Security Systems is an Israeli startup company founded by Shlomo Touboul, former Finjan Software CEO and inventor of Behavior Based Blocking Technology. Their concept for improved mobile security revolves around a very unique hardware concept that utilizes embedded Linux 2.6 kernel based computer systems, miniaturized to the size of a USB key. Relying on a low power hardened Linux environment system for security management sounded interesting to us. The implication of improved mobile battery life and system responsiveness, coupled with the capability to separate security management from the Windows platform, seemed quite appealing. We requested a Yoggie Pico Personal Edition from Yoggie Security Systems, so we could take it around the block and see whether or not it would live up to the premise..... and the promise..... |
