So much for NDA's. Albatron 8600GTS purchased and benched! PDF Print E-mail

8800gtsfrontim7Maybe NDA's arent what they used to be. Apparently Albatron or one of it's australian distributors have allowed their 8600GTS to be leaked to retailers.

Whirpool.net.au forum user "Bβoy" has posted pics and benchmarks of his shiny new 8600 for all to see. The numbers look really good, and point towards the 8600GTS being a very nice midrange performer.

Vista Can Be Taken Down by THE FIX for the .ani cursor exploit PDF Print E-mail

cursorIt's bad enough when we reported earlier in the week that Vista was still vulnerable to an almost 2 year old identified exploit using malformed .ani (cursor) files.

Unfortunately, it seems the fix Microsoft released to patch this exploit breaks Realtek HD Audio and Ethernet drivers/applications. This might seem less serious than you'd think at first. Unfortunately Realtek is pretty dominant in the onboard audio and ethernet markets so this "fix" can break alot of machines.

We found out the hard way patching our Vista x64 Ultimate rig here, but with safe mode and system restore it wasn't too hard to recover from. Let's hope Microsoft and Realtek have the sense to address this now, and not blow it off until the next "Patch Tuesday". Microsoft has at least addressed the issue in a Knowledge Base article here, with a link to a patch for XP SP2 here. We assume a patch for Vista is imminent to work around this problem soon. We hope.

Till more news is evident, if you have Realtek HD Audio or Realtek ethernet and Vista, you might want to steer clear of this "fix" until the fix gets fixed. Tongue out

2nd Week Of UK PS3 Launch A Near Disaster PDF Print E-mail

ps3-consoleThings are not all rosy in the Land Of Fish & Chips, thanks in part to that big manufacturer from the Land Of The Rising Sun, Sony. Last week we saw record sales numbers reported by Chart Track in the UK launch of the PS3 with Sony pushing an estimated 165,000 PS3's out the door second only to it's initial record launch of the PSP in the UK.

Apparently though this was perhaps just a "release valve" on pent up demand, as Chart Track now reports an astonishing 82% decline in PS3 sales during week two.

If you ask us, Sony's European market pricing is outrageous. Priced at a massive 425 English Pounds (that's a staggering $834 in U.S. Dollars) I just cant see "average Joe Consumer" buying into the PS3 in the UK with this pricing. We guess people in Great Britain are just not jumping for joy and saying "I love getting screwed because I live in the UK" and thus arent giving the PS3 a second look. Seems pretty obvious to us.

Sony in recent history has seemed to be an industry giant in danger of falling on it's face. Will Sony do something about pricing equity, and talk to a podiatrist about it's "two left feet?". Only time will tell, but some of these "stumbles" are horrifyingly obvious to anyone who has a clue about the consumer market and the retail channel.

Intel Details Upcoming New Processor Generations PDF Print E-mail

penrynMarking the next step in Intel's "tick-tock" product strategy and cadence to deliver a new process technology with an enhanced microarchitecture or entirely new microarchitecture every year, Intel Corporation will begin producing its next-generation Penryn family of processors in the second half of this year. These new processors benefit from enhancements to the Intel® Core™ microarchitecture and also Intel's industry-leading 45nm Hi-k process technology with its hafnium-based high-K + metal gate transistor design, which results in higher performance and more energy-efficient processors.

Intel has more than 15 45nm Hi-k product designs in various stages of development, and will have two 45nm manufacturing fabs in production by the end of the year, with a total of four in production by the second half of 2008 that will deliver tens of millions of these processors. Below are many of the details of the Penryn processor family and a glimpse into some of the key features of Intel's future generation of processors, codenamed Nehalem.
