In what could be the most embarrassing exploit to impact Windows Vista since its commercial launch in January, security engineers at McAfee's Avert Labs confirmed today - and posted the video to prove - that the operating system can be caused to enter an interminable crash-restart-crash loop, by means of a buffer overflow triggered by nothing more than a malformed animated cursor file.
It isn't even a new exploit, as researchers with eEye discovered in January 2005. At that time, Microsoft acknowledged it affected versions of the operating system from the first edition of Windows 98 through to early releases of Windows XP, though it stated at the time XP SP1 was unaffected.
According to TheInquirer, looks like ICANN has yet again smacked down a bid for a .XXX top level domain. Personally we think that TLD's are already ridiculously diluted, though we don't see what the big deal is over sanctioning an .XXX heirachy. At the very least you'd definitely know what was there so you could choose to partake, or avoid it! :)
THE KEY INTERNET oversight agency decided not to give adult websites their own ".xxx" domain for the third time.
Vinton Cerf, ICANN's chairman said that ICCAN had looked jolly hard at porn on the Interweb and came to the conclusion that giving it its own domain was not the way forward.

We get the sinking suspicion that the webmaster/administrator of this University of California School of Medicine website might have a few things to answer for, after this story posted by The Register gets widespread.
Get it while you can, folks: everything you need to install a pirated version of Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Professional on your Windows-based PC.
The package, complete with a serial number, comes - wait for it - courtesy of the home page of the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of California's Irvine campus.
(Click, or just hover, on the pic of the building with the green tiles and it's yours.)
It's a little difficult to estimate the value of this deal. Although highly functional, version 7.0 is slightly out of date. Version 8.0 lists for $449 on Adobe's website, so we're thinking plenty of people will consider it a solid enough bargain.
ChartTrack has confirmed that 165,000 PS3 units were sold during the console's launch weekend.
The figure is three quarters of the total 220,000 UK launch stock for day one, and makes PS3 second only to PSP in the overall launch weekend sales stakes. The Sony handheld shifted 185,000 in its opening weekend back in September 2005.
PS3’s record-breaking debut for a home console comfortably beats the previous top seller Nintendo Wii, which sold 105,000 after its frantic launch weekend in December last year. Fellow format rival Xbox 360 racked up an estimated 70,000 at launch in December 2005.
The figure also means that Sony has not sold all of its opening weekend stock, something the platform holder claims is part of its overall strategy at retail.
A good friend of mine (thanks dear!!) ran across this blurb on Guru3D. It seems our favorite site of all things talked about before they're supposed to be, HKEPC, has ran across some data relating to Intel's pricing roadmap for the 2nd half of 2007. I don't know about you, but the lot pricing of $266 on Q6600 Quad Core's sounds rather sweet. If you think the price war between AMD and Intel has been intense so far, get ready for more even cheaper goodies!!
Last week we already reported that Intel is planning a very aggressive strategy processor wise and .. money wise. I had a little more time to analyze the data as presented at HKEPC and placed it into a chart. Prepare to be amazed .. So we already knew that at the 22nd of April a new price policy will be enabled. The drop in prices will be significant and we'll see the introduction of 1333 MHz FSB based processors.
According to the data at HKEPC you'll notice that Quad core will become completely mainstream. Core 2 Quad Q600 (2,4 GHz) for example right now costs 851 USD while in April that price will be 530 USD and in the 2nd half of this year .. merely 266 USD. The 2,66 GHz C2Q which costs 999 USD right now will get a price tag of 530 USD and will clear it's space for a new 2,93 GHz model.
The suit has a number of interesting features, including emergency morphine and salt compartments, "magnetic holsters", and a forehead-mounted laser pointer. The helmet has a "solar powered fresh air system", too, presumably more mundanely described as an electric fan – handy for the desert heat. Built into the forearms are a small recording device, a pepper-spray gun and a detachable transponder that can – of course – be swallowed in case of trouble. One particularly noteworthy feature is the Trojan's groin-mounted clock. Clock.
Think this is too freaky to be true? Take a look at this Youtube video...
Today DailyTech ran across a development to keep your eyes on. Uber-thin batteries with fast charge time and high recharge cycles! Battery technology plays a huge role in the overall design of most all portable devices, so thinner higher density batteries could drastically alter the future of mobile devices in a positive way. From the story...
"This is just one of many advantages the 'organic radical' battery has over other organic based materials which are limited by the amount of doping," said Dr. Nishide. "The power rate performance is strikingly high - it only takes one minute to fully charge the battery. And it has a long cycle life, often exceeding 1,000 cycles."
Citizen's of Europe are finally able to get their fair share of Sony's PS3, as the official European launch of Sony's much storied console takes place today. Whether there is any consumer backlash from Sony's decision to use a redesigned (i.e. cheaper) PS3 for the European launch remains to be seen.
The launch of the Playstation 3 may be last year's news in the U.S. and Japan, but the Sony game console is only now arriving in Europe. Here, very early on Friday, Bastian Schewiola hoists a box containing the long-awaited machine at the Sony Center in Berlin, where the PS3 went on sale at midnight. As in the U.S, many midnight buyers were planning to spend the whole weekend putting the PS3 through its paces.
