PCMags Dvorak Sees OLPC As Elitist Insult PDF Print E-mail

800px-john_c._dvorak.jpgTo say that John C. Dvorak is soft spoken, unopinionated, and "PC" would be ridiculous right? Well we say that is ridiculous with a capital "R". Today at PCMag , John chimes in with a rather scathing rebuke of the One Laptop Per Child Project .

So what to do? Let's give these kids these little green computers. That will do it! That will solve the poverty problem and everything else, for that matter. Does anyone but me see this as an insulting "let them eat cake" sort of message to the world's poor?

"Sir, our village has no water!" "Jenkins, get these people some glassware!"

Though we ourselves wouldn't mind to have one of these in the lab to review and test, we're equally in agreement with Dvorak on this one. Giving "gadgets" to children in locales where basic nutrition is a big question mark seems extremely foolish, elitist, naive and borderline insulting. Read his article in it's entirety here .

Over the years I've come to the opinion that John Dvorak is often just an angry bitter pot-stirring journalist. On this issue however, I think he's more or less on the money. There's so much spin and politics behind the OLPC at this point, it begs the question...Why couldn't this level of concerted effort be applied to things like water, food, and basic sanitation. Our priorities are woefully backward here.
Why not technology?

One - the XO is NOT designed for children in refugee camps
Two - the governments involved decide if they want to buy it or not
Three - you are free to send your poverty reduction money to any charity you want, there's plenty of them. OLPC is just one of many doing poverty related work, I'm sure you can find one working on water, food, sanitation or healthcare.
