Conclusions

Much of the 5500 review is a rehash of the conclusions we came to with the 5300 review, owing to the printers basic similarity. Text mode printing, while not as sharp as a laser or optical led page printer, is plenty sharp enough to our eyes. Its photo printing capability is extremely good, belying its quoted lower resolution than other printers in its class. This is due to the Easyshare line's combination of a much more accurate printhead mechanism relative to the competition along with its carefully matched paper offerings.

easyshare_5500_front2.jpgThe duplexing attachment is our favorite feature of this printer. Enabling duplex printing is as simple as checking a box in the printers control panel and just plain works, giving you seamless double sided document printing without following goofy instructions or manually flipping stacks of paper. Its functionality as a copying machine is adequate, though rife with the speed and document handling capabilities of most printers in this class. Fine for occasional copying, but no match for a dedicated copier. The integrated fax capabilites are nice, and certainly on par with most standalone inkjet fax machines. Cost-wise your in about the same boat or probably cheaper with the 5500 than, for instance, getting the 5300 or 5100 and a seperate fax machine of similar capabilities. We just wish Kodak had taken the next step and integrated the fax functionality at the operating system level to save us all some paper.

That nitpick aside, the Kodak 5500 is a nice, extremely rugged All In One Printer that deserves consideration as your next home or home office printer. As we've been using the 5300 and 5500 printer for several months now, we've found no reasons to regret using them, and they've saved us a little money on replacement ink as well. Recommended.
