Conclusion

The Seagate FreeAgent Desktop is a good example of a well respected hard drive manufacturer offering a simple and easy to use product at an attractive price point. With the packaging quality and the warranty, it's clear Seagate is taking the lucrative retail sector seriously.

The price we ran into at retail was just too good to pass up, and in line with the pricing you can find on this unit online at many online resellers. Having a local store to take a product back to is a reassuring bit of insurance in case things go wrong, even if we don't expect to ever have to.

Performance via USB 2.0 isn't anywhere close to the potential of the 320GB Barracuda® SATA drive , though this is just a minor disappointment and has nothing to do with the unit itself. It's not as portable as some other units, since it's tethered to the desktop environment with both USB and Power cables, but you rarely find this amount of storage at this sort of price. Especially in a retail store.

If you're in need of some decent inexpensive storage and lucky enough to hit OfficeMax before it goes off sale, we recommend you consider the Seagate FreeAgent Desktop 320GB for your external storage needs.

Ive had this for a while and cant help but notice how attractive it is. Of all the external HDD's ive ever had this is easily the best looking the glowing strip is mesmerising. USB 2.0 is pretty average, but underrated. With 7200 rpm its pretty fast. A recommended buy at the right price!

I have recently aquired this HDD to use with my MacBook for location sound recording. I have been very impressed with the performance of this drive and for the price is a must buy! Performs as well as the vastly more expensive lacie drives.

Guys and gals, just got a call from my bro, Walmart in Atlantic Canada is selling these drivers (250gb) for $89! CAD. Very sweet deal, and given the nice review, I will pick one up today.

hey, i bought this drive a few days ago. it worked fine for a few minutes and then
windows gave me an error saying Delayed Write Failed. i searched on google for this error and it seems that a lot of people have this problem, not specifically with the seagate drive. does anyone have any idea how to overcome this? after copying a few gb to the hard disk it stops responding and it says that Delayed Write Failed.

thanks

BestBuy.com has the 320gb for $79.99. I paid for it online and picked it up at the store since it is on backorder in the warehouse. Can't beat a deal like this. ;D

bought the 500gb version in the uk (£90) and its a great drive... the only niggling point is it doesnt have an on off switch.
There is a power switch...

It does have an on/off switch, look at the base there is a touch sensitive one, to turn it off you have to touch and hold it for a few seconds. pretty cool i think

I bought the FreeAgent Pro 320GB @ Best Buy last night for $101. Only the Pro series has an on/off switch. It is touch sensitive and located (if you are looking at it from the front; opposite end to where the connections are.) to the right front of the base. The software allows for shutdown after a certain inactive time as well.

sorry jaco that your having that problem, it does come up a lot in the external hard drive world. Two practical and simple fixes are to change the usb cable and update the drivers. Unfortunately, there are a handful of reasons behind this error and they can get ugly to fix. But the top main cause can be solve by my two suggestions. I hope that helped.
Thai is incorrect!

The Desktop version of this drive does not have a power switch. Only the Pro product has a power switch. The drives will power themselves down when USB is unplugged, or powered down. I have two (2) of the 500 GB FreeAgent Desktop drives connected to my Linksys NSLU2 NAS. I have the system configured to back drive #1 up to drive #2 every night. I got the 500 GB drives at Staples for $169 each.
Lol no switch on/off

Hi, well it looked nice when I got it.
I've had it for 35 days, and the drive went bad, I guess you get a lemon sometimes, so I won't tear into them about that. But why on earth would they make a drive with no vents on the top? This sucker cooks.
The older push button external drives had much better USB connectors, I bent the jack the first day.
And why is there no on off switch? I mean how much does a switch cost? Everytime you want to turn it off, you have to go down on the floor and unplug it. What if your power strip in behind your desk? I think it's a POS compared to the last external drives they put out. I'm referring to the gray and black enclosures with the push button on the front that lights up blue. Those also had firewire jacks, so you had both options. And those could be stacked on top of each other. O by the way, they are not sending me a new replacement, that 5 year warranty covers a refurbished drive. The good news is that refurbished drives are usually ok, sometimes be...

Got a 320 gig at wal mart for 45 bucks but its only showing 280 of that.. heck of a deal anyways. Any advice on it not showing the full 320 would be cool. peace!

When formatted and partitioned a 320GB drive should show 298GB free. This is because of the different way drive manufacturers and operating systems report drive size. If it's showing only 280GB? Not a clue.

I need a drive for backup and in a few reviews i have read that this drive gets pretty warm under heavy use... if i backed up around 30GB of data maybe once a week, would this become a data loss risk or would it handle it?

Thanks.
Nice HDD in a shit case

I have a unit that I used to back up files and music. This week I changed computers and sought to retrieve data from the unit (which I have done on a number of occasions with no problems. Each directory I tried to open rendered an error message "The data in this directory is corrupted". I am running Vista. I am now at a total loss - I cannot even delete the corrupted directory! The loss of valuable data is about 60 Gb. Needless to say, I will never trust this unit again. Don't believe the marketing spin on the box - save your data to DVD.
