Conclusion

ssd16frontAbout the only drawbacks we can discern with our few days of just "playing" with the drive are it's diminutive size, and it's obviously very slow write speeds when transferring files to the drive. Still, to be fair, at the price point this drive lists at, it's still going to be considered a specialty application device. Coupled with it's rugged shock resistance and wide operating temperature range, this would clearly be the storage device of choice in very rugged mobile, retail, medical, avionic, or military applications. Though theoretically inferior in performance to even the average hard drive, in day to day use we do not see many people "noticing" that this is a NAND flash device.

In the very near future (within the next quarter) we'll be seeing NAND flash devices with read and write speeds equal to or better than the Hitachi 7K250 drive we used (close to 70MB/sec read/45Mb/sec write) and massively higher I/O per second capabilities. As the technology improves and prices begin to trickle down to real world levels we see devices like the Supertalent SSD16GB25M being likely candidates to reside in many portable computing devices.

For rugged and industrial environment use, Supertalent's SSD16GB25M is a clear example of good technology with very little in the way of compromises. And it can only get better.
