In The End
Nothing beats compiler optimizations because a good compiler, like
Intel’s compiler for Pentium chips, will order processing logic in such
a way to make the most effective use of the architecture of the chip.
This is why programs optimized for the P4 always perform so much better
in benchmarks against AMD, and vice-versa. All else being equal though,
the L3 cache in the Pentium 4 Extreme Edition is a welcome boost to the
processor family, and will be of good use in certain applications due
to the fundamentals described herein. Will it be enough to stave off
the Athlon 64 FX while Prescott is being readied? Even our friend the
branch predictor can’t tell you the answer to that one…only time will
tell if Intel will regain the performance crown! {mos_sb_discuss:3}
