Emerson LC320EM8 32" LCD HDTV Review (Video)
Conclusions

Conclusions

As an LCD Television, the Emerson LC320EM8 is certainly comparable to similar 32" models we played with in-store from the likes of Olevia, Panasonic, and Samsung. It's interesting to note that Emerson sourced the LCD panel they used from Samsung, for those out there still confused by how "brands" work in the electronics arena. A comparable Samsung with identical panel specs costs close to $100 more.

As a media center PC display, it fared exceptionally well when used at a near native resolution of 1280x720. Though not as crisp or sharp as a PC-centric display would have been (due to scaling), it was still quite adequate for living room use, web browsing, and light productivity work. It's built in HDMI port removes one snag for the high definition disc crowd, which is exceedingly welcome. All in all we feel that anyone wanting to experiment with the Home Theatre PC concept will be well served by modern inexpensive LCD Televisions, and that the Emerson LC320EM8 is a rock bottom priced example of how easy it's gotten to pull it off.

Here's what I know thusfar. Standing in Walmart, comparing pictures on 7 32"lcd's, only one appeared better: brighter, more sharp, great color . . . a Samsung. Better than Sony, Panasonic, Magnavox, RCA, et.al. And lo and behold . . . the above review reveals that Emerson gets their lcd display from Samsung.

I need a good 32" lcd and I simply have not found a reason not to pay the lowest Walmart price . . . and take home the Emerson. All reviews I have found thusfar, confirm that this is a great value.

I recently purchased this product from Walmart and quickly found several deficiencies.

First, good luck finding a Universal remote that is compatible with this product. I have several, and none of the codes work. This means you have to toggle back and forth between your signal remote and the TV remote....quite an inconvenience.

Second, limited features. There is no access to the audio features, such as bass, treble, balance, or even a basic tone control. I find this lack of function very annoying for an HDTV device.

Third, screen formatting. The sidebar, full, and cinema formats work fine. Once I tried watching "widescreen", the picture became distorted. Objects on either end of the screen would warp. This is most evident watching football, as you can clearly see the yard lines bend as they go to either the left or the right sides of the screen. I know this isn't a problem with the LCD itself, because there is no "warping" using the other formats.

Overall, I am not...

The universal remote that came with my Motorola HD cable box worked fine with it, so I didn't bother looking for an additional one.

Very few (and certainly no value model) TV sets have bass, treble, balance, or tone controls. Certainly none in this price range, or with any models several hundred more that I've examined.

The screen formatting mode "Widescreen" is there to do exactly what you witness it doing. It stretches a standard 4:3 image into 16:9, focusing most of the "stretch on the outer edges of the picture (primarily to not distort the center of the viewpoint). Any approach here is going to be a big compromise. The identical mode exists on several Vizio and Samsung LCD's in the same size range, and the effect is equally "goofy". Don't use it if you don't like it.

As a 1280x720p screen for a Home Theatre PC (which was the main point of the review) when being fed a proper component or HDMI signal, it's quite excellent. I have a Pinnacle PCTV tuner in th...

Radio Shack 15-2146 Voice Prompt Female Universal Remote will work with this FUNAI HDTV as well as many other electronic devices that require a remote. Hauppauge MediaMVP and all Motorola DCT 2500, 6200, 6414 and 6416 Digital Cable TV Boxes with DVR or with Out.

I own the Emerson EWL3706 37" 2006 version with Clear Pixel Engine as this one has, but not listed. HDTV is very sharp and vivid..

This link will take to you my photo shots of the TV in actionhttp://www.putfile.com/tipstir/images/73185

Thanks again for your review on the FUNAI Emerson, it was very good and the video.

Best Regards
